Hey guys,
I've noticed that when I drive my car at a fairly constant speed and then let off the gas for a short period (to slow a couple miles per hour or something), when I push the gas again it clunks. Could this be a torque converter problem?

My transmission is only about 2 years old ( I got a rebuilt one a couple years ago). I've taken it back to the dealership to take a look at it and they never find anything wrong..

I also feel that my car accelerates fairly slow. Maybe it just is fairly slow and it's not something else, but could the torque conveter be playing a role in acceleration speed and the clunk I feel when I hit the gas again?

 

tranny mount? does it feel like its shaking the entire center console, and happen when you accelerate hard from a standstill when the car shifts? Just a thought.

 

Nope, none of that happens.. It's only if say I'm cruising at a certain speed and I let off the gas so I slow up just a bit. It's when I put my foot back on the gas and give it a little it clunks.
Under acceleration and such it acts fairly normal.

 

Check the rear, could be too much play in the gears.
Same thing happens to me.

 

could you fix it any way, or do you just live with it?

 

You’ll have to fix it eventually. I’m not doing mine yet because I’m sure that it will last it bit longer and I’m spending my money on other things first. When I’m able to start beating on the car again, then I’ll change it.

If you could get your car on a lift, or jack up the rear, all you have to do is twist the drive shaft with your hand back and forth. You’ll hear it in the rear gears.

 

there is supposed to be a few thousandths of backlash in the gear ring gear and drive gear. im not sure exactly what the spec is for your rear. if you find the backlash of the driveshaft and divide it by two you'll get a rough estimate of the backlash in the gear itself and that should indicate to you if thats your problem or not. if the backlash checks out then you probably have a different problem.

 

Sounds more like a U-joint going out. That would give you the clunking when you begin accelerating, but not at speed. My first thought was tranny mount, as previously stated. They can fall apart at any time, and look good upon inspection. You have to jack up tranny to be able to tell if they are truly shot.

 

well it turns out that the problem is an exhaust leak. I can see where it's leaking from, the bolts on the y pipe are all covered in exhaust. Time to figure out how to close this up..
