rear end gears?

I am getting ready to change my rear end gears. i was set on 3.73, but ive heard alot of people say that 3.42's would be better for a stock engine. Which would be best?

what gears do you have now? i plan on puttin 3.73's on my car as soon as i get an extra $150. my car has 3.23's stock.

i guess it jus depends on what you plan on doing to your car. smaller gears (higher numerically) = faster acceleration, slightly lower top end

if your going to be racing alot, im sure most would agree to go with the 3.73's, based on what i've learned from thirdgen.org.

im sure if you search you will find tons of results on this topic.

hope this helps...

It really depends on what you have now. If you have 3.23's the going to 3.42 wouldn't be that big of a change. IMO, 3.42's are the best for a daily driver/ weekend strip car but then again their not a big enough change from 3.23's to warrant the cost of changing them. If it is strictly strip then 4.10's would be the way to go.

Right now i still have the stock 2.73's. I need to be able to drive it on the street and ive heard alot of poeple say that 3.73's are as high as you can go to be able to drive on the street like at interstate speeds. but i still what something that will make a big difference on the strip.

Gears need to be matched according to your powerband. 3:73s won't do much good if your cam stops power at like 4500 rpms.

That is of course if you're interested in 1/4 mile racing.
Stop light to stop light then you may be able to get by with 3:73s.

With my 3:73s cruising in OD I'm pushing 2500 rpms.

Thats not to bad, with my stock gears i can cruise at 75 at just a little over 2500 rpm's.
Thanks for your help.

I put some 3.42's in my rear...wish I would have gone a little steeper...maybe 4.10's...of course my car is not stock so I would imagine that would make a big difference. With the 3.42's there is a noticable difference from 3.08 gears. I would think going from 2.73's would be quite a bit different. I think for what you want, that 3.42 gears would be a great choice.
