MASSIVE *CLUNK* noises

My new '87 IROC-Z has some problems with the drivetrain in terms of clunks.

It does a few things:

First off, if I gun the car from a stop or a slow roll, the whole car clunks REALLY hard. It feels like the whole drivetrain is moving in a -not-so-good-way-. Any ideas?

Second, if I gun the car at a faster roll and get the tranny to shift down, there is a big clunk. Then, when the car shifts again into the next gear, if I'm still on the throttle, the car clunks really hard again. It almost feels like the back end of the tranny is hitting the tunnel, its that hard and it feels like its coming from right under the shifter.

I've checked the U-Joints and they aren't moving AFAI can tell.

Can anyone tell me where to check for some possible answers and also HOW to check them?

Thanks

I second that. It sounds like you only get the symptom when you're on it. So the transmission has torn the mount, and now instead of the tranny sitting still it is actually hopping up and back everytime it transfers sudden/considerable power. It sounds terrible, and feels twice as bad!

Tranny mount, I'd bet money on it.

jack the front up support with jack stands on the front control arms, support the tranny with a jack (put a piece of wood under the tranny pan to distribute the load evenly, after the tranny is supported, loosen the bolts going to the crossmember (2 15mm bolts on each side) then loosen the main nut holding the mount to the crossmember. take the crossmember out of the way, then remove the old tranny mount with i believe (2 13mm bolts). reverse order to install new one, i would buy a prothane poly one.

i know what u mean, my old 88 formula 350 had a very bad tranny mount and also would wheel hop, a very bad feeling when trying to race from a light.

Thanks a ton for the help!!!

I bought one at AutoZone for $6.49 (for now - until I get a poly one) and it took me no time to install it.

No more clunking... I was amazed - The first time I floored it and let it shift again, it broke the tires loose... AWESOME!
