My trans (700-r4) shifts like it has a kit in it from 1st to 2nd till I go about 15 or 20 miles then shifts soft (no slip) after that! What's up? would a tranny cooler keep it shifting firm? I've never had a tranny act like this before, any help would be appreciated.

A tranny cooler is definatly a good idea, but it probably won't fix the problem unless you have a severe overheating problem.

I don't have any problem with overheating, matter of fact, I just switched back to a 195 deg. therm. from 180 and put a new radiator in (blew end tank on old one in auto-cross) last week. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about tranny, it works just fine, but it would be nice if it would perform like that all the time. It's like the old days with the dial a shift vacuum control. I'm sure it would bark the tires if I had lower gears, or more than 180 horses, but the 2.73s and 235-55-16s bite pretty good. One would think that it would shift better after it warms up (what with expansion and all) or maybe when it's cool (contraction) beats me! Maybe I should service the darn thing (don't filters flow better cold than hot?) I'm not sure what controls line presure on 700-R4 (modulator, servo, shift gov, cable, computer?) I do know, it shifts at 4500 RPM 1-2-3 with no WOT shift to 4th in OD position, or 5000 if I hold it and shift manualy ( don't take it any farther, not much power beyond 4500). 88 formula 305 LO3 tbi 3in cat back ACCEL cap, rotor, 8mm wires, 4 deg in. timing A-C rapid fire plugs do real good job. Removed cover on offset scoop to extract heat, removed collar inside stock air cleaner and used smaller cover (same diam. as filter) to create an open element.
