Let's play "How long till it blows"

I've got a 700r4 that is sitting behind my 130k mile 305 TBI. The engine is in bad shape and well is out the door.

In comes engine #2. A super ram breathing, fully forged, LT4 hot cammed, beast of a 355...

How long with a routine servicing to the tranny do you think it will last? Before I have to build something more stout. I need to basically save up for the rear and the rest of the drivetrain...

Thanks

James

bye-bye tranny. I'd give it less than 500 miles. 1000 if you're really easy on it.

What would it need to keep it alive? I have seen older 700R4's take the abuse of a ZZ4, granted my engine is a ZZ4 on steroids I am putting in an LS1 driveshaft and just feeling a little stuck as to what I will be able to do.

Well **** - If the transmission is in decent shape currently, I would put a shift kit in it, to firm up line pressure so you wear the clutch packs less. New bands and Packs wouldn't hurt, and some really good ATF - Amsoil/redline/royal purple whatever you choose. A poly urethane mount & secondary tranny cooler from an autozone would help a lot as well. With all this, I think you'll last out the year.

shift kit - 25.00
bands & packs - 150.00 (EST)
atf - 40.00
poly mount - 25.00
cooler - 50.00

290.00 plus tax then the labor... is it worth it?

that all a VERY good idea other then the shift kit price. that sound liek the price for a POS B&M shift kit. get the Transgo kit you get alot more in the kit and it will help save your trans. also lets you shift harder and faster then a B&M kit. i have kick the *** out of a 91 GTA (350 tpi) with my 91 firebird with a 305 cuz i was able to shift faster then his stock 700r-4 (i did have alot more mods but he was a head of me till i shifted into 2nd and BOOM i was gone.

there are two things that kill a trans.

heat and pressure.. get the trans coolr for the heat and the transGo shift kit for the pressure. if you do them other things alng with the AFT and bands like D Stroy H8 said it sould last more then a year. Also get a .500 boost vavle

Well, I was thinking of either buying my buddies built tranny or just buying the rebuild kit from pro-built and than trying to get it all put together... I really didn't want to spend more than a $1k on the rebuild if I could get away with it
