Will a world class T-5 handle 450 TQ?

I have a stought 355 from my Corvette that I want to put into my 1988 Firebird. The vette engine puts out 400 HP and more then 450 FtLbs of torque, will the T-5 live behind this engine? I never power shift the transmission but I do drive it hard at road courses and the drag strip. My current 305 puts out 375 FtLbs of torque and I have never had a problem with the transmission.

T-5

Even the World Class T5 is only rated at 330 ft/lbs. I think you'd be playing the odds on whether or not it would live. I personally wouldn't even try it with a small 350 crate engine. If you do, definately don't shift into 3rd hard, that's the first weak point with the T5s.

The TREMEC 3550 or TKO would be a much better choice.

good luck,

lot depends on how you apply the load too, but even with great luck you'd still be pushing it

500 ft-lbs of torque. Is that for real? I didnt think the case of the t5 was strong enough for that kind of abuse.

looks like its got straight cut gears. Might be a bit noisy for everyday use.

i saw they had a synchro version as well with helical cut gears but i dont know if it would be as strong as the straightcut that they claim is good for 500 ft-lbs. Id like to see them run live tests on trans' equiped with all the available kits so one could see how much each kit will safely hadle.

Actually, there was a whole big post about this site and I believe those are the stats for the Syncro's if im not mistaken, I could be wrong. Either way, just do what the people in that topic did, give them a call and ask, can't hurt . THats what im gonna be using when I get my LS1 or Ram jet .
