Gear Swap

I'm sure this has been discussed, however, I did not find anything when searching for gear swap.

I might have to do a ring and pinion gear swap. Here is the story and I would appreciate any help you could give me because I have never actually removed anything more than spiders and axles from a rear end.

I may have to chance to acquire a posi rear end from an 88 IROC. I currently have an 89 RS with a 10 bolt non-posi rearend. The internals from this rearend are from a 90 firebird with 3.23 gears. The posi unit has 2.73 gears (Yuck!), same as my car came with. I like the 3.23 gears better, but my guess is they won't swap between the rear ends. When I had the rear end rebuilt I paid someone else to do it... they knew what they were doing and it has lasted about 4-5 years now and still going strong... just can't deal with the fact that I am spinning the wheels all the way through first, I do like the strong cherp into second though.

From what I saw, GM switched the rear ends from the smaller 7.5 to the larger 7.5 in mid-88. Then they went from the 26 spline axles to the 28 spline axles for 90. How do I identify weather my the ring and pinion can be swapped or not.

Question 2: I am planning on replacing the whole housing but I would like to install the 3.23 ring and pinion. How do you swap a ring and pinion. I can do quite a bit of work myself, but it generally revolves aroung swapping parts and electrical diagnoses. Would I be better paying someone else to rebuild the posi rear and provide them with the 3.23 gears to put in at the time of rebuild?

Thanks for any info that you can provide.

7.5 and 7.62 differant name for same part, the gear interchange. posi from an IROC ought to be a 9 bolt and not 10 so if that's the case there would be interchange at all. easiest thing to do would be to swap the whole rear assembly. swapping gears requires some specialized tools most people don't have. ron terry has a list if you PM or email him he can help.

Yea, I probablly would have picked up on it when I received it. I checked summit and jegs, these companies don't have 9 bolt ring and pinion sets available. Does anyone know where I can order some gears for a nine bolt?

Thanks again.

Thanks for the info. 9bolt.com has some listed at reasonable (affordable) prices.
