So what did I likely break? T5 related
I've had some issues with my T5 now for awhile. Mostly a problem with 4th gear. Most time it won't go in without some grinding, sometimes you can feel the gears still spinning and I won't chance it and skip 4th altogether.
Well this weekend it was shifting just fine, drove it on the freeway for about 30 miles and when I got off I could not get it into 2nd, 4th or reverse. Let the car sit for a couple of hours at a show and drove it home using just 1, 3, 5. Getting on the feeway back home the trans would not come out of 5th gear. Won't budge, like it's welded in place. Barely got it home, thankfully could roll a couple of stops.
The trans over the last couple of weeks has gotten considerably noiser. Fluid is correct, didn't leak any.
Basically just wondering if anyone had had this before and how bad was the damage. I'm just thinking whether or not the trans is worth rebuilding or should I just give it up and take the bite on a 6spd or Tremec.
Thanks

It's really hard to predict what's wrong inside the trans. Best bet is to go to www.hanlonmotorsports.com and order the T5 video for $17, then tear the trans down using the video to guide you. After it's torn down and you price the repair parts out, you can then make an educated decision as to repair or replace the trans.

I know it's impossible to diagnois this way. Just curious if anyone else had the same thing happen, and what was the extent of the damage. Cause if it's more then a say $500 in parts type of repair, then I'll just bite the bullet and buy a new trans.

let me know if you decide to let the t-5 go to rest. I may offer you some cash for it.

I'm supposed to pick up my T56 in the morning, so let me know if you want my T-5. As far as your problem, geuss you're just gonna have to tear it apart and look inside. Good luck and let us know how the diagnosis goes!

I have a lot of T5 experience, so I will try to give you some insight on whats going on. The first problem of grinding in 4th is MOST LIKLEY not related to your new woes. The grinding in 4th is from a worn out blocker ring. That would be replaced anyway in a rebuild. The problem of you loosing 2,4, and reverse is interesting. And the fact that it then got stuck in 5th is even more interesting. Here is what likley happened:
The top cover of a T5 houses the shift forks, shift rail, and the shift interlock mechanism. This mechanism mechanism prevents the trans from engaging two gears at once. It also acuates the 1-2 fork, and the 3-4 fork.
The 5-reverse fork is opperated by a different interlock (sort of) that is bolted to the inside side of the case. **You know that one bolt that has the torx pattern on in that says DO NOT REMOVE next to it on the side of the case, thats this.**
It sounds like one of these two interlocks came apart first (probably the one in the top cover), eliminating the possibilty of shifting to a lower gated gear: 2,4,R! Thats why you only had 1,3, and 5.
After contineud shifting of the trans, the other interlock came apart (probably the 5-R interlock) in such a way that the shift rail was stuck in 5th. Once this happenes there is NO getiing it out of 5th without taking the trans apart. Pieces of the interlock are probably now floating around in the bottom, making noise.
Now the good part. THIS TRANS IS NOT TOAST! If what I described is what happened, then a standard rebuild and proper reassambly will take care of it because these interlocks must be taken apart anyway. Unless one of the pieces got chewed up, and took out all the internals with it, you will be ok. Don't worry, parts are available and these transmissions are not hard to rebuild.
P.S. I will buy it off you no matter what condition it is in.

Thanks guys.
Right now my plan of action is to try and find another T5 and then rebuild this one. So I always have a spare.

I had a T5 in a mustang years ago that got stuck in 4th gear. Fortunatly it was under warranty. They said it was broken syncro rings, took 5 weeks to get the parts. I was towing a trailer with ATC's at the time, which made it tough pulling away from a stop. No trouble after it was repaired.
