I have a 91' RS, 3.1L, 5 Speed, Hydro Clutch

Just installed a new clutch kit. Now the trans won't go into gear at all.

Reverse will grind if you try it with the clutch pressed.

All other gears won't engauge.

We had no problems with the clutch install.

Any help would be greatly appreceated. I haven't had a Camaro in 14 years, and just got this one a few weeks ago.

what have you tried? did you blead the slave? if not remember its plastic and strips easy. let us know what you have tried

I have bled the clutch, 3 full reservoys full. I shift like a new one in gears 1 -5.

Reverse is another story. With engine running, and trying to go into reverse, backup lights come on, trans grinds and will not go into reverse gear.

Turn engine off, put in reverse, start up, it works fine. Take out of reverse shift to any other gear or none at all, try to go back to reverse grinds if you try to shift it.

Some told me to start it up and try to force it into reverse kind of did that, but don't want to screwup anything.

Something about a syncro was out of wack????? Anybody got an answer???

Your clutch is not dis-engaging for some reason.
If you can get a helper and measure the throw of the slave cylinder, it should extend out just over ½" with the pedal going to the floor; If it does, that part is fine.
Two or three other possible causes...either the clutch disc and/or throwout bearing were put on backwards; or the 'springs' on the fork that hold it onto the ball stud were not slid over the ball stud.

I am having this same problem. I just did a seach and this came up. I put mine all back together, and start it up, and with the clutch engaged, it wont go into any gear at all. Just goes. tap...tap...tap...etc. I know the gears are hitting together at different speeds. I figured the clutch asnt disengaging for whatever reason, so i jsut changed my slave cylinder and bleed it correctly and everything. No change. I asked a couple of people I kinda trusted (not to much trust though ) And they said it was almost impossible to put a clutch in backwards unless you were stupid and just put alot of torque on the pressure plate bolts. I really need my car to run, so I can have transportation and go to work, etc. Someone please help... Thanks in advance.

First: learn the correct terminology.

"Engaged" = what it's supposed to do when your foot is off of it; i.e. transmits power

"Released" = when you push it; i.e. the trans is released from being coupled to the engine


OK, now that we've got past that, I'll post my famous pic that came from someone with the same problem. Look at the 2 halves of this pic, and tell me which way you put your throwout bearing onto the fork. I'll bet I already know.

Mine looks like the second one. I made sure to put that on right, cause it never came off. This is why I am bewildered. I am still in this problem, and I looked at it some today with no avail. I might have to rip out the tranny again tommorow to see if the clutch is in backwards. I dont like my tranny right now but I have to do what I have to do. Thanks for your input.

i am having a similar problem. i can get my car into all the gears, but half the time it grinds reverse... ive seen him post that pic numerous times and i know i put my bearing in the right way.

i was just wondering if there is an adjustment for the "throw" of the pushing rod. (sorry i dont know the right name for it)

if not i guess i have to bleed the system...

I just fixed the problem, the clutch was in bacvkwards. As for your problem. Reverse is not a synchronized gear, so it will always grind going into reverse. Just do what I do, I go into first, to stop the tranny, and then in reverse, bingo! No grinding. Anyways, good luck with yours, mine is finally done! Party and burnout time!

Might be more common than you think.... but I tend to assume that people get that one right, because clutch discs are usually marked "flywheel side" or the like.

Well when I first bought the clutch, "Flywheel Side" was painted on on side of it, but since its been a little while that has worn off, it is not written anywhere else though. Yeah Im glad I got it going, even though its a V6 camaro, I miss driving my own car instead of gettings rides or having to take my moms van. Thanks guys, later,

yea, its weird. sometimes it will grind, sometimes it will be just stiff, and other times its smooth as butter. I wouldnt mind having this tranny rebuilt. but anyway- im glad u got it rollin again!
