Boss Hog converters?
Ever heard of them? "ACC Performance", or "Performance ACC", all I could find on the box. Saw a guy selling them at Super Chevy this weekend. Was talking to a racer buddy later and he tells me he's been running one for 5 years. Basic differences between his '65 Chevelle setup and mine is he has a 454, is 100 lbs lighter, 3.55 gears vs. my 3.73, & the converter (also different manifold & 750 carb); he runs 1 mph faster but a full sec. quicker! (really shows up in the 60' time)
So, I took a chance before consulting with all you experts and picked up a 2800-3200 version (same one he has) before the show left town.
This is for the 396/TH400, in case you were wondering.

The ole "Boss Hog"
My buddy with the 70 Chevelle bought a new one when he dropped his 327 between the fenders, very loose convertor on the bottom end, but mph was very consitent at the big end for 2 years. He pulled it out in place for a BTE and handed in down to his brother and his 78 Malibu. Ran in behind 3 motors last season and stall speed varied of course as did the mills, but mph kept the same behind all these motors as well. I guess they call them "junk" because it was soo cheap, but if you really look at the mph, it did do really well. The Boss Hog is sitting in storage up in the attic of the shop just waiting for the next tranny to be thrown into.

Well, that wasn't exactly a glowing testimonial. I believe I'll go ahead and install it and see what happens. I'm really looking for more consistent 60' & ET rather than MPH. I've decided my TCI Sat. Night Special varies quite a bit depending upon temperature, which is hard to control compared to engine temp. My best times seem to come when the rounds are closer together (or I've just driven to the track).
Boss Hog
I ran one for 4 years behind my 406 on the bottle. It was the 3800 + i think. It flashed about 4000 The car ran 10.50s at 130 mph. I woundnt be afraid to get another one. It only cost $229 when i got it. IT didnt slip much when just driving around either.

I'm assuming you launched on the juice. The guy with the Chevelle says his stalls closer to 3200.
It's in the tranny, hope to get the tranny reinstalled this afternoon. Found a broken tranny mount and brinelled u-joints in the process of removing the tranny.
I paid $220 for it.

Initial impressions:
Couldn't do a full battery of tests on a quick test drive, but the two times I nailed it I didn't see the tach below 3500. With basically no stall, it was up in the power immediately.
Cruise RPMs at 65 mph were less than 100 above what the TCI did (2200 stall). But, it does take more RPMs to get the car moving around town (gets into the Bullets' cackle right away now).
Will get quantitative data this coming weekend.

Haven't had an ounce of trouble with it. Still stalls the same as when new, 60' times have been more consistent than I could have dreamed of before.
Even worked well at sea level last fall...

I guess I never supplied the promised performance data. I don't have the details in front of me, but 60' times dropped significantly, in the .3 sec range. In fact, my high altitude 60' times now are better than my sea level times in '02 (although admittedly DP carb vs. VS, and cool air intake vs. open element are also in the mix). In '02, I had 60' in the 2.05 range at Topeka, now there're typically around 1.92 here, with a 1.88 in cold weather the best seen. Last fall in Topeka and Pomona, they were in the 1.76-1.78 range.

Sounds good.
I have been trying to decide between the boss hog or the Jegs brand. Both are close in price, but I dont know anyone running the jegs unit. I have heard good thing about the boss hog from guys at the local track. Im looking at the 2800-3200 unit.
thanks for the info.
Hope you keep having good luck out of it.

I ran a Jegs unit for 2 years (the 3500+), and that is one consistant convertor. Once I got the car figured out I was typically in the low 1.7? range 60's. 2 years, countless wins, and won plenty of cash running it so I have nothing but good things to say, you would'nt go wrong with it.
Cant remember if I posted or not but 2 brothers I used to pit with for 3 years ran a boss hog convertor, very consistent but not nearly the year end take I brought home with the Jegs.

Im going with a complete rebuild kit from Pro-Built. It will have the alto red eagle clutches and kolene steels. And cant leave out the Trango shift kit.
What do you guys suggest? Boss Hog or Jegs?
This is the Jegs converter I am thinking of going with.
Jegs converter

Personally I'd run the Jegs over the boss hog, it's not quite as loose on the bottom end. But alot of racers swear a loose convertor helps make the car consistant.
I never had a problem with the Jegs unit, I won ALOT of races with it since it was very consistant. Either way I think you'll be happy with whatever route you go. Not having personally run a boss hog I cant vouge for them like 5kid can, i just had 2 close buddies that ran them that were'nt in the winner circle nearly as often as the bird was.
What are your cam specs? to match up the stall speed.

I plan on running the comp xr282hr with either 1.5 or 1.6 rr.
Here is the Cam Specs
I will be running the stock 92 L98 cam untill I do a cam and head swap. This is not a daily driver, so I think it will be ok untill I do the swap.
What do you guys think? I was thinking of getting some of the new brodix IK200 heads from summit. I dont think they are listed on the web site yet, but they are in my new summit.
200 heads with 64cc chambers. aluminum bare are $699 a pair. Sounds like a good head for the money. Now If I can just find some flow numbers.

What trans are you wanting the converter for? Your profile says 700R4 but your Jeg's link is for THM350/400 I can get the Boss Hog for you for $197.99 + shipping.
Also here's a head that I sell a lot of that my head porter also likes.
They are made by Renegade, not too well known yet but the specs and price speak for themselves!

2.02/1.60 valves
Straight or angle plug (I suggest angle for plug access with headers)
Early style (pre 87), non-EGR
Bronze Guides cut for .530 seals
Hardened steel seats
Accepts standard or center bolt valve covers
comes assembled with stainless steel valves
Dual springs for up to .700 lift
7 degree retainers
Machined locks
guide plates
3/8 screw-in rocker arm studs
here's the flow
.200 112.5 97
.300 163.3 135.5
.400 209.2 167.9
.500 243.5 176.4
.600 265.2 175.8
Now for the price $875.00
only a little over $300 more than Vortecs!
OH did I mention that these are aluminum!
Comp Pro Comp, 1.52, 3/8 stud $249.99
Comp Pro Comp, 1.6, 3/8 stud $249.99
MotorVille stainless clones of the above $219.99

Bluegrassz: The stall specs are right on par with what the cam needs, so that will be a good combination so long as rear tire size and gearing is correct to maximize the total package.
katman: Those are some pretty impressive numbers, equaling Darts Pro 1 230 heads LOL!! The exhaust side looks to needs a little help to equal out so to speak, how have they performed after being a trip to get ported? imagine the intake side could probably be massaged for a little more low end flow, but the exhaust I assume really wakes up?
Give me more info on these heads as they look to be a great budget head with awesome performance potential. Are they retailing through any common race publications, or just starting out and working through local shops/suplliers right now?

My porter is doing a set for my wife's car right now. He says a little bowl work, a tiny bit in the chambers, and a 1" port match will improve them about 30%!!! I bought these heads from my machine shop before I knew what brand they were. Once they came in, I found out the brand and thought damn I could have bought them wholesale! This tells you I thought they were good bang for the buck before I could get them for cheap! They are pretty close to the AFR 205s. I was kind of thinking 1.52 intake, 1.6 exhaust.
I digress, I found out from my supplier that I can get these heads, bare CNCd in 195, 205, and 210. They also have the valve and spring kits to build them.
They are sold through machine shops and of course through:
KAT Automotive
Did you see the price on the comp clone rockers? A lot of the Renegade products are just private label of name brands. I've got a 400 block that I'm going to fill with Renegade parts and 2 stage fogger. This thing from Nitrous Express has eight solenoids and draws 160 amps. With that kind of draw horns going to suck!
I'm also a new Nitrous Express Dealer!
Spray on dude!!

I keep running across links that are linking this thread to a group purchase on those heads and more details… huh…
Are there more details out there? I’ve got 2 vendors that can get them and one of the guys that I deal with all the time _swears_ that they’re aluminum pro action heads that are being sold under all sorts of labels, kind of like you can buy canfield’s under assorted labels, like the jegster aluminum heads are canfields.
Actually, I didn’t even bother checking… comp cams bought pro action didn’t they? I wonder, we’re comp dealers and both warehouses that we deal with carry comp stuff…
Katman, you don't have any pictures of these things, do you? I'm assuming that they have something resembling a fast burn chamber design... what intake gasket pattern do they match? (figures that I can’t find my pro action catalog when I need it…)

Katman, you don't have any pictures of these things, do you? I'm assuming that they have something resembling a fast burn chamber design... what intake gasket pattern do they match? (figures that I can’t find my pro action catalog when I need it…)
