Speed Sensor Hell

AHHHH that damn speed sensor.

well ever since I bought the car, the speedo has been wobbling and inacurate....someone said the VSS went bad....then I got a VSS SES light so I knew it was time to change it.......

Autozone ordered me the wrong part 4 f*cking times...so finally I went to Murray's and got one that fit. I bolted it on....put the plug in, then took off to see my brand new working speedo. After parking and going to class, I came out and it was dead. It doesn't even move now. I checked under and it's still bolted fine with the plug intact... What could the problem be?? Thanks

omfg....I just swapped the speed sensor for ANOTHER new one.....and the same exact thing happened. The speedo was perfect until I parked and shut off the car....then started it back up and it wobbled for a minute then just died. WTF?!!?!??!?!?!?!

I'm not familiar with the VSS at all, but is it possible that you've got a short that's killing the part when you shut it off?

Well I think I've narrowed down the problem...

After taking out the VSS and looking up in the hole, the red drive gear on the tranny looks chipped. Chipped "teeth" is not good I guess. It looks mounted on a bar up in my transmission....anyone have any ideas how I can go about fixing this? Thanks

yes, you need to remove the tail housing ( sounds real bad but, rather easy just a bit of time) you need to remove the drive shaft which will cause some trans fluid to come out so have a pan ready. remove the torque arm mount or open it allowing the torque arm to move up/dn, remove the hanger from the exhaust to the trans (If I remember there is two nuts that hold it to the trans. sam as the bolts going to the torque arm mount) remove the speed sensor then remove 4 bolts holding the tail housing to the trans. the speed gear (drive) is just slid on the shaft and held there with a clip under it. use a small screwdriver to release the clip and grab the grear with a shop rag and pull real hard. some times they need some encuragment with a prybar (being carefull and clean not getting peices all over the inside of your trans)
