Need help with reverse

I just bought a '86 Trans Am. It runs fine, has no problem shifting or going into any of the different drive options. But it will not drive in reverse, it just sits there and revs when I try. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

if it is an automatic, u could try and see if the shift linkage is lose, or check your fluid levels, manual try fluid levels, other than that, i would have to say ur transmission is hooped

thanks, it looks like everything has been moved up one spot, so the blank space between park and reverse is now reverse, reverse is neutral, etc.

Your shifter cable is loose, stretched, or misadjusted. Pull up the center console and see what's bent/broken.
