Found a nice rear end. . . .

I was walking through a junkyard and found a Camaro that had the front clip cut off of it. I got the rear off of it and expected to just be getting a 2.73 open POS like what my car come with but I get the thing home and notice right off the bat that the rear sway bar is really thick, like double what mine is and the drums on it are aluminum and have been balanced with some kind of little round disc weights. I get the cover off and its got a 3.73 open in it (41/11). I was just wondering what did this come out of an IROC or something?? Second question how hard is it to swap out the carrier for a posi unit?? Thanks

Ede, what should my backlash be on used gears?? The gear oil in it still looked like new, really light brown, not dark. What does L69 mean??

Actually it's not necessarily the TPI 5.0, my '84 TA originally had an L69 and it was a CC Carb motor, I belive the L69 was the Crossfire motor in '82 and '83 (please correct me if I'm wrong) Basically, as I understand it, L69 was the code for the "H.O." (high output) 305 that was available each year (at least during the early years of the thirdgen). If I'm wrong in that please correct me, but that's how I understand it. In any case L69 doesn't necessarily mean TPI or '85-up.

L69 is the code for a 305 H.O. carb motor. 305 TPI motors are LB9.

oops

my bad, i get the LB9 and L69 mixed up every time!

LB9 is the tpi 5.0 motor i was thinking of, the L69 is the 5.0 cc q-jet high output motor, as for me id like to swap in me an L98(famous 350tpi) block hehehehehe thatd be fun, heh.

the l69 had 3.73 gears and posi. If it has an open diff it is probably from a 6cyl or 4cyl car.

Actually (interesting factoid..I guess) not necessarily. My '84 TA was originally an L69 car and did NOT come with a posi. It's got 3:73's but not a posi. The L69 was part of the WS6 performance package (in fact in some literature it states that you can't get the L69 without the WS6 package) which included the HO (L69) motor, hi performance suspension and posi rear with 3:73's (with the option to go for discs...I don't think they were part of the WS6, but I don't remember from the literature, since I don't have it right in front of me). The interesting part is that there was this other package - the WY6 - which was available. This is the package my car was equipped with, the WY6 was exactly the same as the WS6 except it did NOT include the posi rear end. It figures that I have the luck of getting a WY6 car and not having posi, but that's ok because I did get all the WS6 suspension stuff (bigger anti sway bars, L69 w/ electric cooling fan, etc...) Anyway, just because it's got an L69 doesn't necessarily mean that it's a posi (at least on the birds, it may well be different for the Camaros, I haven't done research on them) Anyway, sorry if that was boring, but I thought I'd share it as it's one of the little things I've found out along the way...

P.S. I figured this out from looking at the '84 Pontiac dealer portfolio I got of eBay and comparing it to the PHS documentation for my car. PHS shows the WY6 package, but the '84 dealer portfolio doesn't, it's very odd and the WY6 appears to be quite obscure.

WS6 has read discs standard. In fact in 82 they ran out of disc rears and created a new suspension package... WS7. Which is WS6 with a drum rear. shrug.

Yep! That's the one I wasn't sure about...I remember reading about the WS7...lol this is kinda turning into a history thread , thanks for clearing my memory up on the discs....the WY6 had discs as well (same as the WS6) just without posi....kind of an odd package, but whatever I guess lol
