Rebuilding Rear - Do I need a new axle?

I'm rebuilding my 3.42s with an open differential. I want to replace the open differential with a posi unit. Do I need to get a new axle?

Thanks.

It depends on what kind of posi unit you're putting in and what year rear you have. For example, the SLP take-off requires 28-spline axles but a 1985 rear only has 26.

That is not good news to me. I have an 85 rear end. Any posi's use a 26 spline axle?

Thanks.

89 was when gm started making the change to 28 spline so any pre 89 and some 89 posi from any gm 7.5 ten bolt would work with your axles
