stripped trans cross member nuts

well yeah, somehow both of the trans x-member bolts got stripped. how can i fix this? i cant think of anything else but to tap the holes to 7/16. i believe they are 3/8 threads now...

both of the holes are on the same side too, so i need to get them fixed. they are on the left side.

That's it. That's the solution. I did the same thing, and I had to drill and tap.

wow, so i guess this happens a bit? i thought to myself how could i possibly strip these things! lol. glad to hear its been done. did you both drill and tap to7/16ths? or can you jsut tap it directly. i got some extra bolts (those bolts that connect the trans and the bell housing together) that ill probably use.

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Those bolts that connect the trans and the bell housing together are metric (M10x1.5, same as the original crossmember bolts), and will strip out again if you tap the holes with a 7/16" tap. There's not really enough meat on the 'nuts' to go much bigger, as it's actually a piece of stamped steel inside the framerail.

I used a heli-coil kit when I had a hole strip out. Hardest part was getting the car high enough to get a drill under the car.

yup.... i havent done it to my car, but when i was in high school, a kid doing a clutch (or somthing) stripped out the threads to his firebird

i ended up being the one who had to teach him how to drill and heli-coil it......

Stripped threads for trans cross member

I had the same problem. I kept ripping the bolts out at the dragstrip using Nitrous. What I finally did was retapped the the threads and put a 7/16 helicoil in and then welded the bolts head to the crossmember. Have not had a problem since. he only problem is if you have to take your trany out for some reason make sure you have access to a welder or hot enough torch to undo the weld. Oddly enough that is what I'll probally be doing this weekend. I think my Torque is going. Oh well this was one guys solution to the problem.

ummm.... why dont you just put a stud in there, attach THAT, and then bolt it to the stud?
