9 bolt axle removal...

9 bolt axle removal...
i know the axles are just supposed to slide out after the 4 backing plate bolts are removed, but mine don't budge. anyone have any suggestions?
(i'm swapping the pbr setup from a 2.77 rear onto a 3.27 rear)

The axle bearings are pressed onto the 9 bolt axles, and then go into the axle housing with a slight interference fit.
Take a 3 foot or so length of chain and put it over a couple of axle studs and use your lug nuts to secure it on. No need to tighten them down, just thread them on until they bottom on the chain. Then take the chain and move it close to the axle, then give it a good jerk outwords to take up the slack. A few times like this will generally get it out. If not, find some kind of weight to attach to the chain, move the chain in, and give it a few more jerks. The extra weigh will help pull the axle out.
Hard to put this into words, but hope you get the idea.

Find something to use as a prybar (I used the wooden handle from a hammer) and put it between the axle flange and the housing and gently bump the flange until it pops loose. I had the same problem with my 9 bolt when I pulled the axle.
FYI: when you go to reinstall the axle be sure to get the two sets of splines on the carrier lined up or it won't seat completely.

I used a slide hammer with the axle flange adapter. Not even 3 slaps per side, and they came flying out.

thanks for the suggestions guys. i actually used one someone else told me, bolt the brake rotors on backwords and give it a few raps with the hammer

ya sometimes they just get stuck from being in there for so long....usually isnt that hard to get out....
its not an interference fit though by the way.....an interference fit is even more extreme than a press fit, meaning the OD of the inner part is considerably larger than the ID of the hole.....
in fact its not even a press fit, the bearing should just slide in and seal up nice once you get the splines lined up
