Powertrax locker - posi installed. My conclusions

In short. IT KICKS @SS.

The long version:
Ok, here is the story. I live where it snows, rains and what have you...unfortunately. Now for 2 winters I lived with a 100lb sandbag in the back of the car (92 RS 305 5speed), however, these 'one wheel wonders' suck for traction no doubt. NO DOUBT! lol. Now I had been reading everyone's posts, emailed a couple of you (thanks for you comments) etc about posi this and posi that and I was still a little wishy washy about the idea until this one day. lol. I park my car in an underground garage where the ramp out is concrete - which normally is not a problem. However this one day the fine owners of the building decided to wash it. Well, needless to say I couldn't get out the 'normal' way. I had to take a run at it. I tell you I've never been more pissed off than at the moment.

This is the straw that broke the camels back.
So, I went down to performance unlimited and did it. That very same day. And here are the results.

Overall I have to say it was the one best improvement I pulled off on this car. That first double strip of rubber (had to try it right? Come'on) was fabulous. And I cannot believe the difference on snow, ice, rain...We had a good foot of snow drop here which turns into ice and slop and I had zero problems anywhere. I MEAN ZERO - I was totally fired up. I mean everyone was stuck or spinning and I'm just driving right on through...WITH NO SANDBAG. I mean no weight at all. So as far as that goes this was THE best improvement to pull off. I'm sure people were surprised when their spinning out and not moving and i'm driving right by them...lol..priceless.
Ok, some things you should be aware of that I never found out from any posts or anything. And this is not to be discouraging at all for you future posi buyers.
I did notice that under acceleration the backend of the car can sway a bit as you gear up (i have manual)...if you accelerate over normal - ie: hard acceleration. In parking lots, yes, it will click if you are turning tight and yes the car will 'buck' if you are turning slowly and not under positive acceleration ( a minute amount will solve this problem or even turning in neutral will stop the bucking). It took about a week for me to get the hang of of it as the car seemed totally different. Even the wife noticed the difference when she rode in it the first time. After you get used to it and drive normally you really don't notice it much anymore. The biggest thing to notice is when you are turning tight. If you are under acceleration (I don't mean ACCELERATION - just like turning left at the light) it causes no issues. I also noticed it is easier to 'slide' the rear end of the car around when cornerning. However it is a lot easier to control it now as both tires are doing what they should be instead of 1 spinning and other just being dragged around.
The only negative thing I have about it is the bucking..which really only shows up when I'm driving lazy or to cautiously and turning tight in gear under neutral throttle. I guess it 'torques' up the locker and tries to release as it thinks it's under load and tries to lock up but after you get used to it it rarely occurs and usually it occurs because you forgot about it. Hence a lot of neutral cornering in a tight situation or slight positive throttle is a must. I think auto tranny's may have less issues with this as there is more 'give' in the system.
A lot of comments about the clicking I read about and yes it does click. However it ONLY clicks if you're turning tight and not under any kind of throttle. As soon as you go positive throttle it disappears right away It is rare when I hear the clicking at all. Usually when I'm parking or something tight like that.
Keep in mind you will have to get used to it - takes a couple weeks before the swaying stops freakin' you out and the paranoia subsides but I have to say, all in all it's definately worth it. I was very hesitant about it (took months for me to decide and then finally I had to get slapped in the face about it) but I am happy with the purchase. I don't have experience with other lockers or posi's so I would rate this locker about an 8 out of 10 for the sake of the bucking and clicking. If you have any questions or comments - here is the place! Good luck.

Glad you had good results. But what exactly is a powertrax Locker?

Finally someone understands! I installed one in my RS last fall, did it in the cold, froze my fingers off doing it, heh. Anyway the bucking you are describing is wheel hop, and I've got the same problem, it is indiginous to the locker as far as I can tell. You'll really notice it if you try to gas it on wet surface conditions on a right hand turn. I can attest to it making a big difference in winter conditions, I used to live in PA and my car never got stuck even in heavy snow. I've recently moved to Florida and no longer need the traction provided by my good old locker, I'm going to get a limited-slip rear end assembly sometime in the future.

i had a powertrax....the bucking thing is normal.....i liked that thing alot, and it even survived having a splined axle end broken off inside it....but sadly it went with the rest of the 10 bolt to make way for the moser 12 bolt

I had one in my 92 RS with the T-5. We found that as long as you corner with the clutch pushed in to remove any torque from the drivetrain, it won't buck. Glad to hear you like it, it really makes a huge improvement having limited slip

I've had a great time with mine too Need to get some new rear tires soon lmao. There was one uphill corner that would give me problems in the rain, 1 wheel would spin the whole way up but after the locker was put in.. no problems getting up the hill

Good to hear you like the locker. But, it gets better. Like the manual states, the harshness and noisy operation will diminish substantially after 1000 miles or so. I had my Powertrax for several years with nothing but praise for the unit. It worked great in the snow for me too. I still have mine sitting around in my garage - it worked so well I kept it and plan to put it in my S10 before the weather turns bad here. I replaced my stock rear with a built 4th gen rear so its no longer in use.
