Lower idle in 1st compared to OD?
Hey guys, just a quick question. I have an 87 IROC with the 700R4, and noticed that while in od or d, my idle will hold at about 600 rpm. But, if I pop it in 1st it will drop to about 400 rpm and if I sit for ~10 sec it will die on me. I always thought that by manually shifting, all it does is raise the fluid pressure slightly for firmer shifts.
Fluid level is where it is supposed to be. Checked it hot at idle after running through the gears a few times. There are no noises, smells, it shifts right, doesn't slip, and the TC locks like it's supposed to.
Is this typical, or should I look into it more? The car has 69,000 miles on it, I'm assuming it's the original trans.
Thanks,
Matt
