home made posi?
i saw on monster garage ...thatthey welded the gear cluster togather some how and formed *posi* or whatever you wanna call it.....was just currious if thkis worked on our cars....not hat i wanna do it, or think its safe.....just wondering if it really worked

Welding the gears together would be fine if you were doing it to a bomber or street stock (roundy-round dirt track) but not the street. If you do it on a street car you are looking at bad wheel hop around corners, excesive tire wear, and broken parts.

If you are looking for an inexpensive quick "posi", first cruize the bone yards for a used rear end. Who knows, you might find one with a nice 3:23 or 3:42 gear in it. If you don't find anything there and are not concerned with a gear change, and the rear end on your car is in good shape, then buy a Powertrax.

It works, but only if you want to go striaght. When you turn your posi will de-couple and allow the outside wheel to turn more than the inside wheel that is sorta pivoting.

just buy a spool, or mini spool. It ties it all together hence doing just what you were talking about.

4x4'ers do it all the time. I think it's stupid but apparently it is perfectly safe to them.
The main reason for breakage is the uneven heat distribution when welding. It severly weakens the gearset and other components. welded spiders + rain = ditch. It's called a differential for a reason

not a single person here hit on the big problem.
first off, lets talk about how the axles are held onto the diff.
theres these little C clips.... on the inside ends of the axle.
these are the only things holding your axles (and wheels) on.
if the axle were to break anywhere along its length, the wheel would come out and off.
locking it like that on the street makes it overstress the axle... eventually it WILL break. not a good thing.
i watched a guy do it back in high school.... sure enough a couple weeks later, i was there to watch the tire fly out and him smack the wall at cooper dragway. fun!
somewhere on here is a nice pic of someone whos axle broke and they coasted to the side of the road.... the axle is out a foot or so....

Even with out a welded diff, the wheel would still roll away if the axle were to break with a c-clip rearend...
I saw it happen once at the track, that sucked, they had to shut that lane down for a while to clean all that crap up!!!
I would weld the diff if I was planning on taking the car out for one last fun night before I set it on fire!!!
