Which rear would work best for me??

Between these 3 rear axles, which would work best with my setup?? Which is the strongest and would bolt up with minimal trouble?

The 3 are:

3.27/posi 9-bolt disc rear ends w/iron calipers
3.27/posi 9-bolt disc rearends w/aluminum calipers
3.42/posi 10-bolt rearend w/aluminum calipers

I currently have a one-legger 3.73:1 drum rear that I intend to either upgrade to posi, or get one of the others above. I love the 3.73's though.....but I will have the 400 in the car before I switch to posi. And what's the diff between alum or iron calipers, besides the obvious?

If you did a search, the consistent answer would probably be the 9 bolt with the PBR calps.

Been on here for 4 years and never knew it. BTW - the 9 bolt w/PBR calip. is NOT the consistant answer, but thanks anyway.

I'll just do searches and ask no more questions then...

Thanks xpndbl3 - I've always heard 9 bolts were stronger. How well will that type of rear adapt w/o any major mods to my '83?? I know about the metric/SAE brake line diff. between years already.

I lied about asking another question then.....

And yes I did a search - but this question is probably too dumb...

What does "PBR" actually stand for??? I know PDB would be "Power Disc Brakes", which come with either aluminum or iron calipers from what I've read.

Which one does "PBR" refer to??

For all the "experts" that are thinking of a smart*ss response to this, feel free to not respond. Never had to mess with a rear till I got this car, so I'm not well versed in this at all.

If the 9 bolt with the PBR calps is not the preferred approach, let me know what is. I would like to know why someone would recommend a 9 bolt with the iron calps. I've got those iron calps on my 85 and the replacement PBRs are in my garage. Dyno Don has my 9 bolt. All I need is money to get them installed.

A ten bolt with PBRs? Why would anyone choose a ten bolt over a 9 bolt?

I have no idea what PBR stands for. It is some company in Australia.

As far as installing a 9 bolt in your car, again I recommend that you do a search. This subject has been covered extensively. There are no major mods. Among other things you will be changing the e-brake cable and hoses. IIRC that e-brake cable also needs a custom bracket. I had Dyno Don make one for me.

Feel free to ask questions, but keep that search function in mind.

I've done searches, and maybe I'm missing it...I don't claim to be great at doing searches, but I can't seem to find the answer....

You're saying PBR is an Austrailian company- but there are two 9 bolt rear ends the guy is selling if you see my first post.

Both have 3.27:1 ratios which I'm not excited about- one that has iron calipers and the other has alum.

Does PBR denote the one with aluminum calipers, and this Austrian company called PBR happen to make it? Then I may better understand what I'm looking for. Are the spline counts diff between those two (26 or 28)???

The other is a 9 bolt also, it happens to have iron calipers....is it not as strong and what's up with iron calipers?? Why are they so bad?

The only reason why I'd even consider a 10 bolt over a 9 bolt is due to the better ratio (3.42:1)...which is closer to what I have now. Hope this explains why I'm a little lost here. - Thanks!

Yes, the PBRs are aluminum and they are preferred over the iron Delco-Moraine calps. The iron calps on the stick shift cars (but not automatics) were the subject of a recall. The darn things just stop working. The front brakes do all the work. Why the feds let GM get away with a recall on stick shifts only is beyond me (but I'm sure somebody on here will have an answer).

And if all that isn't bad enough, just wait until you have to change the pads on those Delco-Moraines. The job is just a nightmare.

The PBRs are a much better calp.

Now, as for the rest of your question, such as spline count, I'm going to have to pass, but I'm sure somebody else has the answer. Good luck.

All 9 bolts have 28 spline axles.

If I had a choice between the three, I would buy the 9 bolt with aluminum (PBR) calipers.

Why would anyone choose a ten bolt over a 9 bolt?
I did. I had a 9 bolt and a 10 bolt, and I sold the 9 and kept the 10. I had a set of richmond 4.10's that I could get for $25 for the 10 bolt, and there is a much larger, cheaper aftermarket for the 10's as upposed to the 9. Now granted a lot of people would probably disagree with parts of my decision, but it seemed like the cheaper, potentially stronger with some money, an easier route to take, so I did. And plus, I was able to sell my 9 bolt for more than I could my 10 bolt, therefore I had more to spend on my 10 bolt to beef it up that much more. Just thought i'd answer your question.

You get 1 more bolt. Seems simple.

j/k The 10 bolt is cheap to replace, will hold the power he's making, and gears are cheaper.
