700R4 idle changes
700R4 idle changes
My tach is messed up (I'm able to hit 8000 rpm according to it) so i can't tell where i actually idle but when i am sitting in park, my tach shows about 2000 rpm when warmed up. when i shift it into reverse or any drive gear it drops to 1500 (normal on my tach) but in neutral it shows the same at park, 2000. Also, i can tell the engine changes and the car does a little jump/lurch when you shift into and out of reverse and drive. I just want to see if this is normal.
Also if i sit there and move my car between reverse and neutal while sitting still the car will start to bounce, can anyone explain that? Do i need a fluid drain?

A little bit of RPM drop when you go from neutral or park to a speed gear is perfectly normal. Usually a couple hundred RPM is normal, which I suspect is what your car is doing, given that the tach is screwed up.
The bouncing has me baffled. The lurching could be due to an idel that is set too high. An automatic car should probably idle at no more than 650 RPM. I'd get a working tach in the car to properly troubleshoot this.

thanks for the help. i'll have to get the tach working then get back to you on what's going on. my friend hooked up his meter to my car and my car idling at around 500 but we couldn't find out much more than that.

My tach in my stock instrument panel was messed up. It idled at about 2500 rpm. I replaced the instrument panel with one from a 91 z-28 and the tach indicates properly now and I got the big speedo.
I'm excited becasue i just went to the boneyard today and got a new cluster and pull-down hatch motor. i put them in and my tach reads properly now! the odometer needs to be rolled back but i will do that some time before i get the car inspected in march. I'm too lazy to have to go through all that work now.
