Tranny Identification
Hello, I got a transmission from a guy (700R4) and it's got the torque arm tailshaft part on it. The # on the side of it is:8TUM292B. Now I know that it must be an '88 and the 292B is the date and shift respectively but what is the TU? Just trying to figure out what it originally came out of. (Was told a GTA)

You may want to try posting this on the history section. I think you'll have better luck there. Add something like "transmission code help" or "trans part number ID". Just a suggestion.

I've had no luck in the history section. This there a place anyone knows of that has this kind of info. I was on 3rdgenformula.com, but could not find info correlating to this number. Any help would be appreciated.

I ran across a passage last night while reading through my transmission overhaul book. It had a whole page of two letter codes that tell what kind of transimssion you have. I didn't see TU listed, but my guess is that it is just telling you that it is a 700R4. More specific information isn't given in the book. There are many codes that correspond to the 700R4, so they could be for various applications, but I have no way to determine what the applications for the codes were. You might try your local GM parts counter. Sometimes they will have people there that know stuff like that, or at least where to look for it.
