take the pinion to a shop to get the bearing pressed off. there is no bearing between the carrier and carrier bearings, there is a shim between the carrier bearings and the case. not exactily on the EPAs list of things to do but you might want to hose down the pinion with some r134 and see if the bearing comes off. try not to get any on the bearing.

well i got the pinion bearings pressed off at a buddys shop for free.....but the problem is, it was a small harbor 99 dollar press that wasnt wide enough for the carrier to slip into it.....well the base of it wasnt wide enough....i told them they could stack some wood up and use it liek that to take up the slack between the carrier and the base.....and alas....they had no wood....bastards....

ok on a different note.....it took alot more than a hone to hollow out the old pinion bearing....it took a carbid cutter and like 20 mins to do one bearing lol.....thank *** for the port and polishing.....i had carbid grinders laying around and a die grinder....and the skills needed to hollow that sucker out.. altho it took no skill at all haha

so at least ONE thing went my way.....is it safe to say all pinion bearings are the same width so i can go by tkos advice?? and use this hollowed out bearing to easily slip on and off to set the pinion depth ....then have the good bearing pressed on with the corect shim?

also....when i shim the pinion, do i have the yoke on and torque it down , or can i just drop the pinion in and not stick the yoke on...and not torque it down. this is just to check pinion depth....i dunno if the pinion is pulled closer to the yoke when its torqued or not so i figured id ask...


if i didnt explain that well enough tell me, ill try my best to explain what i mean a lil more....thats about the best i can explain right now though lol

as a rule they are the same thinkness but you'll find some that are .001 or so off. i measure the old and new and do the math to figure out what i need, mic the bearings on the inner part that seats aginst the pinion. you migth want to start a new thread after thursday, i won't open this big a thread from home. takes too long to load.

wait, whats .001 off, the bearing height?? sorry that threw me off cause i asked like 20 questions.....i dont have a depth mic

im using those T gauges....and reading the pattern the gears make. i guess at least..

so do i or dont i need to torque it down with the yoke in place to paint the gears and measure the pinion depth?

yes the thickness of some bearings i've checked are slightly differant, like .001 or so. not much but a little. i always measure the old bearing and the new to see if they're the same or not. to measure pinion depth just stick the pinion in where it goes and measure, no need to tighen it up or anything. leave the crush sleeve off. the pinion nut is a one time use deal so if you tighten it you can't reuse it.

wellllllll/.......i cannot find a inch/lb torque wrench that measures down to 5 in/lbs anywhere.

i have looked at Lowes, Home depot, Advanced auto, auto zone, pep boys, sears, harbor freight.

i have found some on ebay....for 100 + dollars.

Another option is a drag gauge. Not sure where you can get one of them either.

BTW, do you have a Sears or a Sears Hardware? We've got the Sears Hardware, which stocks a lot more stuff than the regular Sears. Try them online and see if they have one.

i know everyone has differant budgets to work with but 100 dollar torque wrench isn't bad. i have 6 from snap on and the going price on then right now is around 250. there's a lot to be had on e bay for less than 100 dollars.

on another note since i've not had much to do at work altely i made i dial indicator pinion setting tool. don't have anything to use it on but i beleive it'll work. basically i made another piece like my datum pice described earler and tapped the top of it for 1/4-20, on the .5 edge in the center. made piece from stainless to thread into it. made it tall enough to place a 1" travel starrett indicator on it and threaded the other end 1/4-20 ro attach the indicator to. from the surface of the datum to the tip of the indicator is over 2.5". to use it i'd have to place a 1-2-3 block on the tip and measure to the datum surface and firgure out what the indicator reading would be for the correct pinion depth. trouble is i don't have anything to test it on so i don't know if it'll work or not but i believe it will.
