I have a 700-r4 in my 83 z-28. Last summer I lost all forward gears, but reverse works fine. I took the car in and had all of the tranny fluid flushed out and replaced the filter. It lasted about 2 weeks before the same problem came back. I have been told that the previous owner abused the car(neutral drops, etc). After reading various manuals and talking to some people I have come to think that the accumulator pump went out. I bought a B&M shift kit with a few pieces for the accumulator pump in it, if I rebuild the pump at the same time that I install the shift kit, think it will bring my forward gears back???

Unless your a certified trans rebuild specialist, I would go and get a used tranny and drop the kit in it. You probably have a bad servo and clutch pack wear and damage from all the abuse.

 

here's a clutch/band schematic for the 700r4...shows what is in use in what gear...sounds like the forward sprag clutch assy, or the forwards clutches...

try this...

do it manually using 1...2...3...OD...this uses the overrun clutch to assist the obove assys...be easy, and if it shifts until OD...then you know it's one of the 2..
