Car won't shift past 2nd

We have just gotten a 1989 Camaro iroc and when we got it we were told that the detent cable needed to be replaced because it will not shift out of 2nd gear to drive. When you stop at a stop sign when you accelerate the car goes from 1st to 2nd the rpm climb like it is slipping and then if you floor it then it will shift into drive and go fine until you stop again and then you have to go through it all again. We have tried to adjust the detent cable the way it is illistrated on this site but that has not helped does anyone have any suggestion what to do next we are at out wits end. Thank you for any help!!!! Kensi

Most likely the 3-4 clutches are gone, common.

I agree with Pro-Built. Why do people think that jockeying with the TV cable will fix problems like this? I've had experienced trans people tell me this too, and guess what? It never works. I've yet to see a better adjustment than doing the automatic adjustment procedure. That's probably why GM engineered that feature into the system in the first place.

I think the confusion comes from older transmissions that used a kickdown linkage. The TV cable isn't a kickdown linkage. It doesn't work like a kickdown linkage. It's a throttle valve cable. It gives the trans information about throttle position, not just WOT for a downshift, like a kickdown linkage.
