Installing a torsen
I got me a zexel torsen, slp takeout posi. question is my rear is a 86, im gettin 28 spline axles, but when i change it, can i just put the 3.42 ring gear on the torsen carrier and not have to re shim it, granted i keep the shims that come out on the same side they came out of.
thanks

check your backlash and contact pattern before you do the r&r then swap the ring gear to the new carrier and replicate the original back lash and contact pattern. not hard to do and no need to mess with the pinion, only shims you'll see will be o nthe carrier and they won't change.

I just started w/ the stock .035" Pinion shim and that is the one I needed when I did the swap to the 3.42s. I had to play w/ the shims for moving the carrier side to side, but that wasn't that hard. Depending on the housing and carrier it may not just be a "use exactly what was w/ the old setup" type deal. But it shouldn't require that much work I wouldn't think.
