4th gen driveshaft

Does anyone know if the 4th gens have aluminum driveshafts and would they work in a 3rd gen with a 700R4?

I frequently go 80mph+ in my 89 Camaro and it vibrates a good bit. Someone told me that an aluminum driveshaft would take care of the problem, but the local used parts place only carries parts from 10 years back, so I would ask them for a driveshaft from a 94 Camaro or something I guess, but I want to make sure it will work first.

Thanks!
Jamie

From what I checked out, all driveshafts from 1982- 2000 are the same no matter what trans.

Oh really?

The LS1's had aluminum driveshafts, the LT1's did not. Get a driveshaft for a 98-02 Camaro/Trans Am.

(Edit) Info fixt.

manuals are not a different length. Only thirdgen I can think of that won't fit are the older 82-83 thirdgens.

I was told that when I was going to swap to a T56 that I was going to need a different driveshaft.

They are not all the same. Most LS1's came with a 3" aluminum shatf. You will find that it is hard to beat the value and performace of the LS1 aluminum shaft. However some 2.73 geared LS1's came with a steel shaft. All LT1's came with a steel shaft and some were balanced and others not. Get yourself an LS1 shaft and never look back.

Oh MY! I forget when I post on here I have to spell out every detail.
The reason I didnt mention "aluminum driveshaft" or steel drive shaft is that we were speaking of fit not material.
So, a late model aluminum drive shaft is fully interchageable, regardles of transmission, rear end, from 1982-2000.

Yea you are right. Sorry for the confusion. I think we thought that you meant you could get any old driveshaft from various f-bods and have them be the same in every way like the rear stamped LCA's and panhard rod.

Nope, interchangable. Believe its when you keep the older 82-83 transmission and put a new driveshaft they won't fit, but pretty positive all other years will fit using a t-5, 700r4, 4l60e, and t-56.

4th gen driveshaft

Thanks for the advice, although I'm still a little confused.

Do I just tell them I want one for a 98 Camaro and it will be aluminum and will work?

Just be specific, say you want a aluminum driveshaft from a 98+ fourth gen camaro or trans am, ask if its 3" in diameter. If its 2.75, thats a 1LE aluminum driveshaft.

"Them" is the local used parts yard. They have their own junkyard, plus can order parts they don't have from all over the country from other used part yards.

I wasn't sure how much one would go for, but there is one on eBay right now going for $130+. It's from an LS1.

I just called the local parts yard and asked for the shaft from a 98 and they wanted to know if it was with or without the 3 4 2 ratio. He said the standard and auto are the same, but I need to know the ratio? What the heck is he talking about?

The rear gear ration. He asked if you had 3.42 gears in the rear... just say "yeah" I don't think it matters.

Just nod andc agree, it doesn't matter what the rear ratio was, its not like the ratio will space thne damn rear end anymore, just get the driveshaft.

to summarize and clarify... 98+ driveshaft for a v8, that did not have auto and 2.73 rear gears.. it'll be 3" diameter.. the smaller diameter (I think it was either 2.5" or 2.75") was a 1LE driveshaft that came in some thirdgens and a few fourthgens if I remember right.. but you'd probably rather have the 3" LS1 driveshaft, since it'll be stronger.. and yes, ANY 84 and up (not sure about 82-83) driveshaft is interchangeable.. make sure to get the u-joints with it if you can..
