700R4 identification question

Does anyone know how to identify what year and make a 700R4 came out of? Maybe by the numbers on the side? Also when they say 27 splines vs. 31 splines which splines are they talking about? The smaller ones or the bigger ones up front? Thanks

The spline difference is for the input shaft of the trans. Not the front pump drive. It's the inner set of splines.

The easiest way to be certain of the year is to drop the pan and look for the auxiliary valve body. This started in '87 and is one of the reasons the '87 and up 700R4s are considerably better than the easrlier ones.

Thanks, I learned about the spline difference after a little help yesterday from Scott who I bought a tranny from. I don't know where I got 31 splines from. It will easily throw you off though if you don't know which set of splines to count. Thanks for your help though.
