Possible to run a 700R4 without a governer?
If I put in a full-manual valve-body, would I still need the governer? My tranny is eating governor gears, but it shifts fine with a new gear for a few miles, so I dont think there are any major components that are messed up. Any idea what could be eating the gear up?

If you have a full manuel trans i dont see why you would need a govener. If your only replacing one gear try replacing both. Eventhou it may look of if its damaged it will tear up new gears really fast.

If you are eating up gears that soon, it could be that you are using a TH350 governor gear, it looks almost identical except that the pitch on the gears is slightly different, and will cause this. Another thing to check is the cover being to tight (in the middle) and pushing on the governor itself, and this will strip it. When installing the cover "do not" hit in the middle of the cover just the edges. If you have the tail section off, then you can see what clearance you have. .030" - .050" is ideal, less than that can cause problems.

I'm not sure about the gear that was in there to begin with, but I purchased a brand new governor assembly for a 700R4 and installed that, and now the transmission is exhibiting the same problems that happened the first time I lost everything but first gear. The middle of the cap was pushed in (like it was hit with a hammer) when I first removed it, but I repaired the cap (I didnt have another one handy), and re-installed it the correct way (tapped around the edges). I've been trying to decide weather or not I should attempt to repair the 700, or if I should just go ahead and get a TH350. I've got another governor gear, and a brand new cap, I'm just dreading having to fix the gear again, it was a pain in the but to put that cap back on with the tranny in the car.... Do you have any tricks for putting that cap back on while the tranny is in the car? Also, can a mal-adjusted TV cable cause the governor gear to get chewed up?
