i have an 85 ta with the auto and 305 tpi, i want to change it to a 350 with a 4 speed or a 455 and a 4 speed. My dad has two spare 4 speeds for his 77 ta, so he doesnt need two of them . He would give me a good deal on them and i dont need overdrive , i dont drive far and it would also save me from doin the hyrdaulic ****, which i really dont want to deal with , even if its easy. I need to know, where can i get the stuff, corssmembers , shifter and linkages and all the stuff so i can run a 4 speed in the car.

if you don't want to deal with the hydrolc stuff you sure don't want to deal with a 4 speed manual clutch swap

my complete hyd clutch system install... by MrDude
------------------------------------------------------------------------

bolted up master cyl.

routed hose/slave cyl

bolted up slave cyl.

went out and took the car for a drive.

it CANNOT be easier with a hyd setup. a mechanical one is 10 times harder to install.. esp on a car not designed with one in mind.

even if he has the 4 spd for free, you're better off putting a T5 or T56 in the car.
heck, you can get a entire T5 setup for almost nothing... and everything is a bolt in.

why is it so much harder. i think i would rather only have 4 gears and, well i just want a 4 speed instead.

well, you have to cut out some way for a mechanical setup.

you need to make or buy a aftermarket TQ arm mount... usually they sell you their aftermarket TQ arm to go with it..

you need to make or buy a aftermarket crossmember

and for the cost of the crossmember alone, you coudl get a T5 setup.... and then you have overdrive.... see my point?

Yea so is a Saginaw 4 speed which came in those 70's TA's. Seeing how it is a 77 it has a BOP engine so you need a bellhousing as well to fit a SBC. It's your wallet and your car, anything can be done to make something work. Its not that hard to do what you want I'd suggest you rethink the hyd clutch setup it's 100x easier to fab up on somthing like this than a nearly non existant 82 mechanical linkage setup. Oh well better go pick up the peices of my T5 from the street.:P

It's not just the year of the car, it's the components you need to get from another 82 that had a 4 speed. The crossmember from your 82 as well as the driveshaft will allow you to bolt a 4 speed of your choice in but the tq arm mounting will still be a factor unless you happen to find one of the very few Munccie eqquipted 82 cars. I think it was a wide ratio M20, I not sure since Ive never seen one that wasent a reject 4 speed saginaw transmission better suited to 4cyl and small V6 cars. Either way your better off getting a newer hyd clutch setup, it makes the install easy since you dont need to weld parts onto your car for the Zbar, just run a hose down bleed a done.

torque arm isn't an issue, i already have a spohn Tq arm for a th350.... mounting is still the same. I guess what I'm asking is, is it all linkages and ****, or are there brackets and things I need to fabricate/jack in order to make it all work? I'm interested just as a curiosity. it would be cool (to me) to have a muncie in my T/A.
