Gl5 vs GL4 gear oil

ok I hear that GL5 gear oil has a problem with eating brass parts is this true? please base it on fact not just what you hear guys also
how long does it take to eat the parts would you say also?

and hwat are the real differences between GL5 vs GL4?

also what is up with some people using ATF in their manual gear box?
whats the point/reason in doing that when I would think gear oil would protect a lot better then ATF

if i really wanted to know or research it i'd get the MSDS for the oil in question. i don't belive there is or could be anything that would eat brass parts and not harm aluminum, steel, or plastic. as for aft gm switched to atf in manuals to increase milage, among other reasons. i use amsoil or m1 gear oil in all my manuals ,reguadless of what gm says with no problems. the truth is most i ever did was 50,000 miles on a 10 year old wct5, it had 80,000 on it when i switched to amsoil.

Gear lubes have sulfer in them to increase shear strength for impact and high pressure loads. The sulfer not only gives gear lube the distinctive stench, it will reduce brass syncro life by half.

The WC T5's (and maybe the T56?) have linings on the inside surface of the synco's. This lining is of the same type as used in automatic transmission clutches. Hence one major reason for ATF usage in a stick tranny.
