Grey sludge in axle housing on 9 bolt..... common?

Well, I pulled the axles on my 87 9-bolt to make way for some pbr backing plates and brakes. I noticed a buildup of grey sludge stuff on the inside of the axle housings. Is this build up normal? The rearend has been sitting for almost a year and I am wondering what I can do to clean this out? Or will it just get mixed back in when I add new posi fluid? Thanks fellas

Will
