1993 silverado trans ?'s

Hey,

Just got a 1993 silverado over the weekend. It's a 4.3v6 with a 5 speed manual transmission. On the trip home I was noticing the trans was making a crunch noise when engaging the forward gears. The noise seemed to be more pronounced when shifting while the engine was revved high. The guy I bought it from was saying it was the throwout bearing? But I am unfamiliar with manual transmissions. Does this sound like a throwout bearing? The truck has quite a few miles on it (222k) So I am planning on putting a new clutch set in soon. Are there any good websites out there that detail clutch replacing? Will I need any special tools? Does Zoom make a decent oem replacement clutch? They seem to make the least expensive one. How does the truck 5-speed trans compare to the ones in f-bods?

The zoom replacement clutches are pretty good. I used one when I briefly had a 5 speed in the TA.

Your grinding problem sounds like worn synchros to me. It would squeal when you push the clutch in if it was the throwout bearing.

Are synchro's hard to replace? I plan on getting a haynes manual to help me out. Any special tools I'll need? Anything else I should replace while I'm at it?

Synchros are not hard to replace. I have done it before. You may want to do the bearings while you're in there considering the mileage. Maybe pick up a rebuild kit. Depending on which synchro, you may need a gear puller, but that's the only special tool I can think of.

In the T5's some of the parts just slide apart but some are pressed together.
