10 bolt clunking noise--not normal

Okay, I did a search and everyone seems to get clunking noises while driving or switching forward to reverse or whatever. Mine's a little different, and I couldn't find any info on it.

I was near the rear wheelwell and reached down to pull a jack out from under my car. (it's up on jackstands). I leaned on the wheel and it moved in about 1/8"-1/4" and then clunked. Thought it was odd and tried the other side. Same thing. Both have an independant 1/8"-1/4" play sliding directly in or out and clunk at the end of the movement. I looked under the car and couldn't tell exactly where the noise was coming from but I do know that the drum itself is moving indepedant of the axle tube. Is there some sort of shim inside the rear end? Could it be bearings or something? The car made no vibration or noising while on the ground driving that I know of... any help?

I've also done some searching and have found four or five posts with the same symptoms. However, no answers. Is this normal? Just pulled the diff cover last night and installed a TA cover and found nothing out of the ordinary. Someone has to know if up to a 1/4 inch of play in the rear axles is normal...

Worn C-clips? Who knows. I ended up swapping to a 4thgen rear and haven't had the problem since.

I have a clunk also when putting in reverse.

I pulled the driveshaft and checked the differential
yoke Im not sure if thats correct name for it.
Theres at least 1/2 inch play before the wheel turned.
Thats what is causing the clunk.

I have also checked the axles for play but I think 1/8 of
inch is normal. I pulled the wheels and drums to check
the axle bearings because I have a wobble right rear.
But when pulling the rims the lugnuts where loose.

I could use a new rear 20 years old now.

Theres alot of slop in the spider gears after all the time and wear. Mine did that and my current FWD car has the same problem. The previous owner had two different dia. tires on the front of the car

Its Normal

I talked to the guys at Spohn the other day because I thought it may have been related to one of the components I installed just before I heard the noise. They said it's normal for the C clip rear ened. I have been able to reduce the noise to a liveable level by placing the original spacers next to the drums. I also have spacers for my aftermarket wheels. Don't know why that would make a difference, but it does. They do look nice though!!
