axle shafts
i hear that in 88 the fbodys went from 26 to 28 spline rear axles. i need to confirm this romer before i go out and buy axle shafts. i bought a posi unit out of a '96 T/A and i was told that the spines were 28 after i bought it. so any input would be greatly appreceated (sp).

The junkyard isn't selling you the axles. He's selling you the whole rear end, and allowing you to leave behind the parts you don't want. The reason he is doing that, is because once you take those axles out, that rear is completely worthless. Therefore, you pay for the whole rear. In fact, if you asked him for one axle, it would probably be $150; the whole rear would be $150; both axles together would be $150; the chunk alone would be $150; etc. etc.
Given that set of facts, $150 for the pair of axles makes a whole lot more sense, doesn't it?
Those axles are as scarce as frog hair. Everybody wants them, and nobody has any laying around. In fact, I'd bet you can pull all you can find, buy them at that price, and sell them on the classifieds on this site at a profit. Maybe you have the opportunity to be other people's hookup and pocket a few coins yourself.
One nice thing about them, is that it makes no difference whatsoever what motor the car had; the axles are all the same. 6-cyl, TBI, 350, doesn't matter.
New ones are around $250 a pair.

if i can get the rearend for around 150 maybee 200 would it be worth it to set that one up and just swap out the whole housing in like an hour or even a half hour. cause most of my rear has been taken out or apart before so it would come right apart.
