700R4 Tranny Prob... Please Help!
I have an 84 700r4. I bought it from my friend who drove it last year then parked it and it sat for about a year. Before it was parked it drove and shifted nice. Now, i got the car from him it does not shift out of first gear. I can put it into all of the spots on the shifter and it doesnt shift when driving. I have tried to put it into 1 and shift up into drive but that doesnt work either. SO now i have a camaro that can do 30mph. I dropped the pan and the fluid was a little dark but not burnt and didnt smell bad. I also did not find 1 piece of metal shavings in it. So i put the pan back on and put new fluid into the tranny, with a new filter. It is smoother when I put it into reverse and drive. I was told that the governor could be rusted and it is not working properly. I tried to open the cover for the governor but i cant seem to get my hand in in a good spot to get to it. It is right above the cross member (or am i incorrect?) DO i have to remove the crossmember to work on it? Also, i was told a pressurized flush might help too. How logical is this? Oh also i was told to try to slam the throttle with the car off because the valve might be stuck. Well i did and did not work. DO you guys have any idea of what is going on?
Thanks for the help.

The governor controls shift points as far as I know. Using a weights and centrifugal force. So it does make sense if it won't shift out of first.
You can order a new Governor cover from GMpartsdirect for $18 (includes shipping) if you destroy the current one trying to remove it.
To get good access to the governor, and to make the job easier you need to drop the crossmember at a minimum, I would also drop the drive shaft. Use a jack to support the transmission so it doesn't fall too far.
BTW, if you already know about using the jack then ignore it. I'd rather type it out, than have someone come back to me complaining about their busted distributor.

The cover for the governor is held in place by a sealant. Here is some info on how to remove it. You also don't have to drop anything to get it off.

Yeah, its easy to take it off while the tranny is up. But its a pain in the *** to put it back and have it seal correctly when the transmission is up!
Not sealing correctly is what caused my last transmission to go boom. When running the vibrations eventually caused the cover to work its way loose enough that all of the fluid poured out. I fried the band on downshift while trying to pass someone.

Sorry for not mentioning this earlier, the shift points are controlled by the Throttle Valve Cable that runs from the right side of the tranny case to the throttle body. Trending Topics

I have a carb on my car. I looked at the cable an i think that it is aligned properly. But just to make sure, what is your way of adjusting the cable? If i am right the cable is all the way back on the carb. (dont know if i explained that ell enough).

I was also told that the weights in the governor affect shift points too.
I know the TV can change the way the transmission acts. My old stretched out cable caused me to think the 2nd transmission was going a few times. New cable from GM and it was all better......then the pump went and I fixed that......then the governor cover slipped off......and well. I fixed that too!
So now it sits in my driveway because the plates are suspended due to emissions.

I know how to adjust it on a TPI & TBI, not sure if the procedure is exactly the same on a carburated car. Although it might be, you can try it and see.

I was looking at my car last night and noticed that the tv cable was a little loose. I read the article on how to adjust it but i do not see the thing to cqueeze to adjust the cable. DOes anyone have a pic of this part on a carborated engine? It would realy help. THanks for all of the help.
