Transmission is in! Problem though...

I finished the tranny swap today. I swapped a T5 into my Firebird. I'm having one problem though... there's ATF leaking out from between the transmission and the bellhousing.

Shouldn't there be no fluid coming from this spot??? This was my first time working with a transmission, but I assume fluid coming out from next to the clutch cannot be good.

I'm afraid to take it for a spin around the block because of it. I backed it out of the garage, and that's all.

Axle/Gears: stock... whatever that means :)
Pull it back out. It could be the input shaft seal or the bearing retainer gasket. Have someone replace the seal or put some black RTV on the bearing retainer. Dont run it leaking like that...

1st design T-5? 87 or older?

Which one of these pics does it look like?

So this is something I'd need a tranny shop to do for me? How much do you think it would cost to have them replace those if I took out the tranny for them? I'd call places and find out for myself but it's too late here right now.

Oh., and it's from an 85 2.8. It looks like the bottom one.

If it's from 85, it shouldn't be the bottom one, it should be be the top one.

Look at the front countergear bearing, which is the round thing more or less at the center of each pic. If it's flat and shiny, totally featureless except for looking like the edges are rolled over, looks like an upside-down freeze plug, it's the top one; if it is dull and dark grey, with the center depressed which makes it look like it has a ridge around it, and has sharp edges, it's the bottom one.

Being a 85 trans, and therefore being the 1st design kind (top pic), it may be leaking from around that bearing; in which case, you need another transmission. That one has been abused enough that the case is stretched, and the bearing no longer fits tight in the case, which allows the leak. Make sure that's what it is; but I'd almost bet money that you got a worn-out trans.

So fixing this tranny would be out of the question because it's not possible to fix or because it would cost more than a T5 is worth?

I guess I'll have to drop this bastard again.

Here's the old transmission:

Notice the dried up toothpaste looking stuff on it. =\

And here's my replacement;

They both look like the new style to me. Can anyone confirm this.... the old one was pulled from an 85 but I know it's possible someone could have replaced it at one time.

They are both the 2nd design.

There's no need to put a bunch of spooge on one of those; there's supposed to be an O-ring on the bearing. I wonder if somebody took it apart, and when they put it back togther, left that off.
