axle bearings and seals
axle bearings and seals
Just put new wheel studs in the back and noticed that the one side was a little wet where the axle goes in. I think the seal may be going. I figure since I have the axles out now, might as well replace the seals. DO you just pop the seal in or do you need to use some adhesive too?
Since it is apart, should I do the bearings too? Is it fairly straight forward to do the bearings (use a puller and then tap them in until they won't go any farther)???? I am assuming that there is a piece in the axle tube that stops the bearing from going in any farther, right?
Also, I assume you don't grease these ones, do you just dip them in gear oil before installation??
Need advice.
thanks.

i use the permatex in a can, with the brush in the lid on the outter edge of the seal. yeah it's pretty much like you said, remove it, put a new one in. dip in oil is good, you wouldn't want it to spin dry and it takes a little bit for gear oil to get everywhere it should.

Easiest way I know of to get the bearings out is to take a piece of water pipe about ¾" x 6' long, and stick it through the axle tubes and bonk the bearing out. That's a whole lot easier than futzing around with a puller.
The bearings just go in and seat in the bottom of their bores.
You could lube them with grease, or gear lube, or oil; about anything will do. You just want to make sure they don't run dry for the time it takes for the gear lube to get to them.
About 99% of the time, the reason the seals leak, is because the axles are bad. Look VERY CAREFULLY at the part of the axle that's the "inner race" for the bearings; if it has enough wear to feel where the bearings run on it, it's wasted. You'll need new axles, or those "repair" bearings. I've never used those but other people say they work OK.

Does anyone know the part number for the bearings and seals for a 9 bolt. While i had mine out i was thinking of doing this since ill have the axles out. I hope my axles are in good shape. Ill do the rear seal on the tranny too cause i alrdy know its leaking but i know the part number for it.
