Speedometer Gear Change
Speedometer Gear Change
I have searched for this but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I am looking for some kind of details on how to change out the speedometer gears on a 91 Formula with a T-5. Is the removal of the tailshaft and shifter needed? Once this is removed how difficult is it to change the gear? How does the gear come out from the trans? We removed the sensor with the small gear from the car but can't seem to figure out how you pull the gear from it. Just looking for some help so we don't break anything. Any directions would be great. We have the SLP speedometer gears. Thanks in advance.

The small gear on the sensor just pulls off and you stick the other one on.
If you have to change out the one inside the trans, that's on the mainshaft, you'll need to pull the trans out and take the extension housing off. I don't think it can be done in the car; but even if it can, by the time you get to the point where you could change the gear, you've already done about 95% of the work of pulling the trans anyway(all but the last 4 bolts) and you might as well go ahead and pull it out and work on it on the bench where it's easy.

Thanks for the reply. When you say the small gear pulls off does that mean it pulls off the shaft or does the entire shaft pull out? The new small gear is mounted on a shaft like the current one is.

with the small gear, you pull the VSS or cable drive from the trans.
it will have the gear on it.
it just pulls off of it.
slip new gear on....
and put it back in the trans.

BTW: I didn't know SLP made speedo gears for T-5's I thought they were just for automatics.

A cable speedo driven gear has the little gear with 20 or so teeth, and it has a shaft that's about 3/8" diameter and 2" long.
A VSS driven gear is just the round part with the teeth, has a little D-shaped hole in the middle; the old one pulls off the VSS and the new one slips on.
A pic of anything you can take a pic of, along with a description of exactly what you have and what you're trying to do, would be very helpful.
SLP doesn't "make" speedo gears. They just fence them for GM.
