Cleanin out tranny

I had a used 5 speed sent to me. In shipping the handle was removed and I think some of the padding might have got inside the case. I called a tranny shop and they said they need to crack it open to be able to clean it out, and it will cost $230. This doesn't seem resonable to me. Is there a DIY way to clean it out?

You pretty much have to tear it down to clean it up; and there's little point in putting it back together with old bearings and stuff. And that's the definition of a "rebuild".

I'd say $230 is too cheap, to be honest. Sounds like they were assuming putting it back together with all the old parts.

What kind of packing material is it? Most likely, little or none got into it anywhere that matters, and even if it did, it won't survive long in that environment. It's probably not worth worrying about.

Yah it was just foam packing material... I didn't think it would do anything since it's not metal shavings or anything. Just wanted to make sure though.
