open to posi swap?

just a random question, and since i rebuilt my rear with 3.73 and the zexel (with a lot of helkp from certain members here) i SHOULD know this...but since this isnt exactly what i did...ill ask

lets just say ....i have a open rear 3.73 28 spline.

Do i have to reset the pinion depth and backlash if i installed just the zexel torsen.

im assuming yes.

if all you do is swap carriers nothing would change in reguard to the pinion, you'd leave it alone. all you'd be doing is swapping ring gear to the new carrier so all you'd need to do is check back lash and contact pattern.

ah i see....DOH...

maybe you remember helping me build my rear along with another guy who helped .....maybe not

what sucks about the whole thing is....

300 in parts
200 in tools
1 giant pain in the ***
425355 hours reading how to do it

finding out the local junk yard sells 3.42 v6 rear ends for 100 a piece....Priceless.

how come no matter how hard i look around for the best way to go.....it never becomes apparent until i went the COMPLETE other way.

oh well....least i know....uh...my rear is new and fresh, and has posi and 3.73...and uh...i guess its cool that i learned how to do it......even though ill prolly never do it again .....

i figured youd have to change the pinion depth due to the whole backlash/pinion depth dance i had to go through 1000000 times.

looks like i might start building posi 3.42 rears.

Anyone interested? if so...ill go start ripping them out the junk yard.

100 for a junkyard rear is a little much if you have to pull it yourself. The local U-wrench it sells them at 40.99 plus 10 core. That's how my buddy got his 3.73 posi disc rear.

heh. very place around here is seriously expensive.....no clue why...i live in sc too...in the damn south with *******s....youd think 3.73 rears are a diem a dozen...but....WRONG....i searched for months on end before i gave up and built min emyself.

damn glad i did it when i did too.....SLP doesnt have the zexel torsen for 100 bucks anymore

in any event.....chances of the rears even being 28 spline are slim to none.....most junker v6's are 88 and prior.......

guess i should just be happy with what i got, and that i got a lot of tools out of the deal instead of paying someone to do it for me......
