Fluid level question

I have had my tranny rebuilt 2 times in the past 3 years...poor workmanship I guess. Anyway, I bought a 97 T/A a few months ago and the IROC was getting driven (as much as I hate to say it) in the bad weather only. Well it sat for a couple weeks and I went to drive it and the transmission was acting kind of funny (not shifting properly, a little late into 4th). First thought was to check the fluid level and it appeared fine...at the hot mark like it was supposed to be even though I feel some may have leaked out of the pan while it sat. So I drove it a few more times and now it is shifting early into 2nd & 3rd and late into 4th. Now I go to check the fluid; first when they tranny is cool and the fluid is at the hot line. Once it starts to heat up a bit there is nothing on the stick at all...any ideas what could be happening here? My only thought is that the fluid is draining back into the pan while it sits and then once it starts to run it circulates the fluid through the system. I don't want to drive it until I have an idea what could be wrong. I want to add fluid, but then again I don't want to over fill it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

dip stick should say something like check hot in park. sounds like your right about oil draining back after it sits. i'd check it hot and add oil as needed.
