Pinion seal replacement

Okay, I've searched over the boards on how to do this, and I've got it down pretty good. However, sometimes I see people say you have to oil it before you put it in and others make no mention of any oiling? What's the deal? Thanks in advance.

Well obviously, but I still need to know if I should oil it first or not.

I use a light grease instead of oil. Works great, I've never had a problem with leaks.
