Rearend Problem symptoms???

ok so i think something is wrong with my rear end.

when i had the rear in the air i was spinnin the wheels and it would get to a point and kinda become harder to turn (not like hard, but it gave more resistance) then made a clunk and then turned super easy.

i have a non posi 2.73 (not sure what bolt 10 i think) rear.

it acts a lil funny while drivin sometimes, i dont hear grinding but it acts werid, idk how to explain it thou.

so if i have to change the rearend i got a few questions:
-will a 4th gen rear fit?
-would a 9 inch fit/or be hard to make fit? (my uncle has one)

any other info would be appeciated, thanks.

Could someone have converted your rear to Posi before you purchased it?

Do you notice any issues while driving or when you spin the rear directly from the driveshaft?

A 4th gen rear is a direct replacement. you will have to deal with your rear tires sticking out like 2 inches farther on either side. not a problem if you use 4th gen wheels and spacers on the front. A 9 bolt is a lot of work to make fit, unless you purchase a custom one made to fit.

Actually I'm stupid. I thought you meant 9 inch Ford rear. A 9 bolt is a direct replacment.

I'm pretty sure I had that happen to me. Was the transmission in Park? Try putting the rear in the air and spinning the tires again, but first, put the trans in neutral. Then there should be no clunk, and everything should turn super-easy. (The clunk was the open diff fighting the driveshaft, which gets locked in place when the trans is in Park.)
