700R4 Compatibility

Hello,

I know this has been covered but I just can't seem to find the right search term.

Anyhow I'm selling two V6 auto transmissions. I have people calling with V8's and telling me that they will work for them.

I am pretty sure they won't but I could be wrong and thinking of the T5.

So, I was wondering what the diff would be between the V6 and V8 700R4 is.

The last guy that called was very sure that the bolt pattern is the same and the tailshaft length is only thing thats different.

If thats the case could a person just swap tail shafts?

thanks

Bell housing is different, torque converter is different, and input is too, i believe.

I'm 99% sure the input shaft is the same. There's one other difference, though, and it's in the strength of the trans. Us v6 guys got a "thin sprag and a spacer", while the v8 guys got a "thick sprag".

The tailshaft length is the same, us v6 guys use the same length driveshaft as you v8 guys do.

Hey if they don't want to believe you, sell it to 'em anyway. (laughs) They'll know you're right when the trans won't bolt up, and a V8 torque convertor (larger) won't fit under the tranny's bell.

Make sure that it's real clear up front that it's a 6-cyl one; take their money, and tell them that you're not guaranteeing that it will fit their car; if they insist that it will, just make sure they understand that there's no bringing it back when it doesn't work.

Yup, thats how it went down.

I told him I was positive it wouldn't work but his tranny expert friend said otherwise.

usually used 700R4 for V8's go for around $400 (CDN) and I only want $125 so he thought he was getting a wicked deal.

Thanks all

You are forgetting the satisfying grin after the sale about their arrogance.

Oh, and I think Apeiron nailed it.
