how to remove rearend gears?
i need to get my 3.08 posi gears out of my rearend cuz i sold them. im kind of stuck at this point though, ive removed the 10bolts, and the panel, drained the oil, and i saw 2 16mm bolts on each side, i took those out, what is next? do i need to remove the driveshaft or torque arm?

You need to remove the crosspin in the differential, then the c-clips. You can the pull out the axles far enough to pull the how rear differential and gears out.

what exactly are the c clips? after i removed the four inner bolts, i got the two peices to come off that the bolts were holding on, they were C clips i guess? one on each side, they were bolted to the other side creating an O.
you know what im talking about? and as far as removing the axle, do u mean removing the tire, drum and sliding the whole axle?
edit: i also have no idea what a crosspin is. i tried searching but to no avail

No, those are the bearing caps. The c-clips are inside the differential carrier, they hold the axle in the housing.

The crosspin is a big bar about 3/4" diameter that i goes through the differential. It keeps the axle from going to far in and the c-clips falling off, which would make the axles fall out. You need to remove the tire and brake drum or disc to remove the axles.
Rotate the tires around until you can see the shaft, there is a little cutout with a bolt that goes through it. Remove the little bolt, pull the shaft. Then you can push in the axles and remove the c-clips inside the differential. You can then pull the axles out far enough to clear the differential. Then you can pull the differential out.
Oh yeah you might want to put the bearing caps back on so you can rotate the wheels, differential, and axles easier.

One the opposite side of the differential is a cutout where the bolt is. Its like 3/8" or something but metric.

do i have to take out that crosspin to get that whole unit out? i just basically want to take everything out of their in one big peice as possible.
it seems i need to take off the wheel/drum correct? slide the axle back , on both sides of the car, and i can lift that whole gear assembly out?
sorry but i prolly sound real stupid. the only reason i need to take this out is cuz im selling it

Yes you have to take the crosspin out so you can take the c-clips off, which hold the axle in. The axles also hold the differential in. Take off the wheels the brake drum and push the axle in after you take the crosspin out. The c-clip should practically fall out. Then pull the axles out 6" or so, so that they will clear the inside of the differential. The undue the bearing retainer caps and pull the whole thing out.
Its actually way eaiser then it sounds. I did it like five times when i put my posi in.

man reading all this gets me real confused which order i do everything in..
ok so my next step is to remove the tires and drums so i can push/pull the axle correct? thus thats how i remove that pin, which drops the c clips, which then i move the axle in/out some more to release the 'pos' unit?

No first you have to take out the bolt that holds the pin in. THen remove the pin. Then push in the axles. Then remove the c-clips. Then pull out the axles 8". Then remove the bearing caps. Then pull out the differential.

Let's let the discussion occur on the Drivetrain forum instead of Tech/General.

Why are u touching the driveshaft at this point, you shouldn't unless your spinning the axles and differential with it.. If you got the c-clips out pull the axles out 8" the pull the differential out. Thats all.

sorry i didnt mean driveshaft, i ment the axles, the c clips are out, i completely removed the axles just in case.
but it wont budge out! yes the retainers are out, the pin is out , everything except the carrier itself..
is it easier to have the car in gear or neutral?
any tricks to popping it out? a breaker bar or something?

It shouldn't be stuck, but if it is wrap a rope around it and pull on it with a lever of some kind. Use the rope so it pulls the carrier out as you use the lever to pull the rope. It works wonders. After i hammer some bearing shims in, that was the only way to get it out.
