Tranny shot
I just lost 4th gear today. It has been causing me trouble now for about half a year, sliping in and out. I think it finaly went. So I was wondering how difficult of a job is it to change out the trans. Could I do it in a day. Also, what are some good rebuilt trans to buy (700R4).
Thanks,
Rob
Thanks,
Rob
You can change out a trans in an afternoon. 6 bell housing bolts, 3 tq converter bolts, 4 trans crossmember bolts, trans mount bolt, undo Lines and TV cable, swap. Oh yeah, the dustshield too, but that is common sense.

I just had my tranny out this last weekend. Remember a few things:
Make sure you put the torque arm bracket (long bolts that go through tail house) on the new transmission before lifting it into place, or you'll have to pull the tranny again.
Cut a slot in the hole for the dipstick tube to allow it to slide onto the already started bolt.
Route the dipstick before bolting up the trans.
Use a 1/2" crows foot to do the cooler lines along with a swivel.
Use about 2.5 FEET of extensions for the bellhousing bolts - and tilt the engine back some to get the top ones.
Support the engine with a jack and a block of wood on the pan.
Locktite the flexplate to the torque converter and torque to 35 ft.-lbs.
If the new trans is empty, it'll take about 9 qts of fluid.
It's a good idea to do the U-joints now.
Make sure the torque converter is seated into the pump.
Adjust the TV cable when done and filled, and do it again after a short drive (and disconnect it at the Throttle body bracket completely before starting).
Oh, and do it all on a lift with a tranny jack to save a couple hours.
Enjoy!

Th350
1) 3 speed
2) no overdrive
3) higher first gear
4) no TV cable - has kickdown cable and a vacuum modulator instead
5) as far as I know - usually no lockup converter (I think some versions were available with it though but not most performance ones)
6) size and length
7) generally can handle more power
8) not as finicky or easy to break
This should probably be in another thread.

Well,
I can get a jasper trans for $1300.00 I think they list for 1700.00. Or I might just have mine rebuilt. But I guess the only thing to look at is Spend probably 600-700 on a rebuild of my trans, or get the jasper which includes a tourqe converter.
