Changing Gears

I have the 700R4 transmission. I am considering changing the stock 2.72 (I think thats right) to something a little quicker. Right now I use this car basically for around town crusing and the occasional drag. Sometimes I take it to school (~20 minutes in stop and go traffic). Now for a few questions

1) Would the 3.73s suffice? Is that too quick?
2) My mechanic friend told me that if I change them too much I would need to get a new housing or something like that. Would I beable to just goto him with the 3.73 gears and have him install them needing no other parts?

Re: Changing Gears

You can go up to 4.10's...just make sure you get them for the 2-series carrier...or just upgrade your carrier and get a posi...

3.73's will have you running about 2500 on the highway. Not bad at all...you'll have more get up and go, but may lose some mileage at the same time.

Dump the 2.73's...the best 1st mod to any 3rd gen.

Jeg's and summit both sell gears for the 2 series carrier. Then slap a lock-right in it. Its easy and you just can't beat it. A little noisy in the corners, but with my exhaust I couldn't hear it.

I would not recommend using the "special" gears. Not because they don't work, or anything like that; but rather, because in case sometime later on down the road, if you actually come up with a 3-series carrier somehow, you can't re-use them. You'll have to buy gears all over again.

It makes alot better sense to use a ring gear spacer, and normal gears.
