Sychnros Shot? (Help)
First of all, I would like to announce that my 91 Firechicken rolled over the big 250,000 a couple days ago. Over the hill yet?
Anyhow, I encountered a problem with my transmission the day prior and it's been bugging me since. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, the tranni grinds, and there is no sense of resistance in the shift... Almost like no synchro exists.
HOWEVER, this only happens when the car is cold, and after about ~15Km or driving, it feels tight again and shifts just like it should.
I've been just skipping the gear all together the last couple days...
I'm not sure if it's related, but last week it decided to start getting cold out... (below 0 Celcius), so I think what I'll do is switch to a synthetic 75W90 tranni oil tomorrow and see it it helps any... Worst time of year for me to think about doing a rebuild on the tranni...
Anyhow, I'm not very mechanically incliuned, so all I can really think of is a shot synchro, or something worse... What do you guys think, and whats the best solution?
I'll change the fluid anyway, since I can't rememeber the last time it's been changed. Probably about 20,000km ago.
Yes or no to that fluid? Please help!

do not put gear oil in that transmission only ATF, as for the synchro i think if you had a bad one it would do it cold or hot, how many miles on the clutch/pilot bearing?

ATF fluid in a manual transmission? Hmm, the maual says so, I guess you're right.
About 25,000km on the clutch and I'm not sure about the pilot bearing.

There should be a tag right on your tranny that says which gear oil or ATF to use, but if your T5 is from that 91 originally, it takes ATF.
My T5 doesn't like to go from 4th to 3rd, no grinding, it just doesn't want to go unless I reach for 2nd and then put it in third. I think it's a synchro.
Congrats on the 250K. I got 182K on my 91 TBI. These truck motors go forever, huh.

Alright, so scrap that... I drove about 400km today between school and home and such... I skipped 3rd altogether this morning and then kind of unconciously started using it throughout the day withotu any grinds.... So, it's a for sure mornign only (cold) thing.
Any advice on a specific fluid I might want to try? Is there additives or brands that might work better with worn trannis such as mine?
Anything else I might want to try?
What's a pilot bearing? Hehe.

change the fluid, then come back and tell us how it's doing it still, and why double clutch? you need to fix this problem, so you can drive it normally, it's highly unlikely that your synchro is gone only on 3rd gear unless that transmission was abused in that gear

Changed the fluid, and put synthetic inthe differential, so both sound be good for a while... Anyway, it still does exactlyt he same thing, and there wasn't really any filings on the magnet or in the oil itself...
Um, my clucth is hooped though. I'm going to AAMCO today to get some quotes on a Luk clutch and installation, since I really dont' have the time or space to do that right here right now.
Any advice on anything? The guy said he could keep the car overnight and give me a courtesy car, giving the firebird time to get cold, so he can see exactly what it's doing...
Stupid cold weather!
