I"ve a slight problem with my auto transmission.
My car engages into drive no problem shifts ok for 140k trans. however when I pull the gear back to engage just D or 2 or 1 the car still drives as if it was in the first drive position.
That make sense?
All the gear selections drive the same, first will still shift thru the gears like D. Kickdown is fine, fluids are good level though old.
Any suggestions?

my car is '89 firebird,tbi,305, I was told the previous owner put in a tranny from a ss montecarlo ( i doubt it)

 

ok so nobody has any suggestions?
maybe I didn't explain it clearly.
All the drive gears shift the same. I can't hold the car in first or second. Any ideas as to what that would be? greatly appreciated.

You're saying that if you have your shifter in 1, 2, D, or OD, it will always stay in OD?

 

yes..exactly.
any idea as to why ? If its anything major or not?

oh I know nothing about transmissions at all but just a diagnosis and help in the right direction is all i need then I can search and read up on it.

Ok quick update.. today the car is shifting properly again?????
I don't know if its the heavy rain, the cold, or some gunk broke loose inside the trans but all is well again
